420D vs 600D vs 900D Polyester Oxford: Which One Do You Need?
A quick comparison of weight, durability, cost and applications for three common polyester Oxford fabric options.

Choosing the right polyester Oxford fabric
Choosing the right polyester Oxford fabric is mostly about three things: weight, durability and cost. Here is a quick breakdown of the three most common options.
At a glance
| Item | 420D | 600D | 900D |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight (PU coated) | 140–190 gsm | 180–240 gsm | 280–360 gsm |
| Feel | Light and soft | Balanced | Thick and rigid |
| Durability | Light- to medium-duty | Very good | Excellent, heavy-duty |
| Best for | Casual bags, covers and storage | Most bags and outdoor covers | Tool bags, tactical gear and harsh use |
Typical reference ranges for PU-coated 100% polyester Oxford. Finished weight and performance vary by construction and coating.
Which should you pick?
- 420D — Lightweight, basic durability and lower cost. Good for casual and short-term use.
- 600D — The industry workhorse. The best balance of strength, weight and cost for most bags and covers.
- 900D — Heavy-duty and highly wear-resistant. Designed for tough conditions, constant friction and heavy loads.
Denier is only part of the specification
Denier alone does not decide performance. Weave density, coating type (PU, PVC or TPE) and coating thickness all matter. PU coating stays light and flexible; PVC backing adds more waterproofing but also more weight and stiffness.
Pro tip: combine specifications
Many products use a 420D or 600D main body with 900D reinforcement at stress points. This gives a better balance of weight, cost and durability.
